Added 1/08/02: Luther Vandross paid tribute, via song, to some of the great musical artists who passed away last year. Among those remembered were singer/actress Aaliyah, the legendary John Lee Hooker, and George Harrison.
A long diverse list of celebrities were on hand to present the awards, including Christina Applegate, India.Arie, Cedric "The Entertainer", Melissa Etheridge, Faith Evans, Nelly Furtado, Ja Rule, Janet Jackson, Melissa Joan Hart, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alicia Keys, Chris Klein, Lifehouse, Ludacris, Master P. and Lil' Romeo, Reba McEntire, Rose McGowan, Method Man & Redman, Frankie Muniz, *NSYNC, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley, Niki Taylor, and Tiffani Thiessen.

28th ANNUAL PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS
JANUARY 13, 2002 ~ on CBS
The 28th Annual People's Choice Awards were handed out on Sunday, January 13, 2002 at the Pasadena Civic Center. The show was hosted for the second year by King of Queens star Kevin James. Carol Burnett, Tony Danza, David James Elliott, Heather Paige Kent and Reba McEntire were among the many presenters.
The People's Choice Awards are chosen by a nationwide Gallup telephone poll, covering the time frame from November 1 through October 31, which uses a random sample to reflect the views of more than 200 million Americans. The early cutoff in the polling meant respondents, who were able to name any performer or series they liked, had not seen movie hits such as Monsters Inc. or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which were released in November, or the December release The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. The good news is these 3 excellent films will be in the running for next year's PCA's.
Fans are given no suggestions and can vote for any person or program they choose for each of 18 categories covering TV, music and film, often resulting in a head-scratching mix of pop culture icons. For example, Pearl Harbor, The Fast and the Furious and Shrek competed for Favorite Motion Picture, which is a nice mix of genre, but Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends and Frasier were all up for Television Comedy Series while ER, Law & Order and The West Wing competed for Television Dramatic Series. Seems like the "random sample" was comprised of the same people who whip out the Emmy Awards nominations year after year. Hmmmm, maybe they should expand the finalists from three to five to allow more quality shows like CSI, Malcom in the Middle, and Buffy to reflect the diversity in viewer's favorites. Instead we're represented by folks who nominated Bob Patterson's Jason Alexander to represent "the People's" Choice (full story and complete list of nominees). << Official CBS - People's Choice Awards WebSite >>

"Each year the Screen Actors Guild Awards salutes a distinctive segment of the Guild's membership," explains Margolis. "The convergence of our planned tribute to child actors and Miss Fanning's nomination for her outstanding supporting performance in I Am Sam, made her a natural choice to be one of the young actors to introduce this special salute. We are delighted that she has agreed to help us acknowledge the work of her young colleagues in Screen Actors Guild."
In past years, the awards show has spotlighted character actors, commercial actors, background singers, dancers, background performers, animation voice-over performers and stunt performers. This is the only televised awards show to acknowledge the work of union members.
Dakota Fanning, age 7, is the youngest actor to be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for an individual performance. Her performance as Sean Penn's daughter in I Am Sam has already earned her young performer honors from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Chicago Film Critics Association, Las Vegas Film Critics Society and the Golden Satellite Awards. The busy young actress is currently filming the role of a young Reese Witherspoon in the Disney/Touchstone feature Sweet Home Alabama.

74th ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS
MARCH 24, 2002 ~ on ABC
Updated 2/01/02: Nominations for The 74th Annual Academy Awards® will be announced on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President (AMPAS) Frank Pierson and his fellow Academy member, Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden. Pierson and Harden will unveil the nominations in ten of the 24 categories at a 5:30 a.m. news conference, which will be attended by media outlets from around the world. Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2001 will be presented on Sunday, March 24, 2002, at the new Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland® and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. (PST), with a half-hour arrival segment preceding the presentation ceremony.
Added 2/01/02: Announcements of presenters at this year's Oscar ceremony are released through individual press releases each time a celebrity commits to being there. The first announced presenters were last year's Academy Award winners Russell Crowe (Best Actor, Gladiator) and Julia Roberts (Best Actress, Erin Brockovich).
Added 12/31/01: A feature-length animated film will be awarded a competitive Oscar for the first time at the 74th Annual Academy Awards. The Best Animated Feature category was created in September, 2000, by the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who voted in December, 2001 to present it for the first time in March, 2002. Films submitted in the Best Animated Feature category also may qualify for Academy Awards in other areas, including Best Picture, provided they meet the rules criteria governing those categories. Academy President Frank Pierson pointed out that the award is intended to honor not just a film's animation work per se, but a film as an entire creation - taking the script, performances, score and other elements into account.
Of the nine films declared eligible to compete in this new category, three will be nominated. The Oscar will be presented to "the key creative talent most clearly responsible for the overall achievement," normally a single individual, on behalf of the entire production. In no case will more than two statuettes be presented. Also see Oscar 'Tooning Up for 2002 (E! Online).
Animated features have been recognized with Oscars on numerous occasions in the past, beginning in 1938 with an honorary award to Walt Disney for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Animated features also have received special achievement awards as well as Oscars in editing, visual effects, song and score.
The last time a new Academy Award category was established was in 1981, when the Makeup award was created.
Update 1/07/02: Actress Whoopi Goldberg will return as host of the Oscars after taking a two-year break from the high-profile job. Her 2002 duties will mark Goldberg's fourth turn at the helm, following stints in 1999, 1996 and 1994. Last year's Oscars were hosted by Steve Martin, whose dry, understated performance contrasted with the spirited antics of 2000 host Billy Crystal, who fronted six other ceremonies during the 1990s. Whoopi said in a statement she was delighted to return as host, and she noted that the Oscars would take place for the first time at the new Kodak Theater in Hollywood, after years of alternating between two venues in downtown Los Angeles. ``It'll be the first broadcast done from Oscar's new home and I love a housewarming,'' she said. (source: Reuters)
Trivia: On Oscars' all-time host list, Bob Hope leads with 16 emcee appearances, followed by Billy Crystal, with eight. If Whoopi Goldberg hosts one more time beyond 2002, she will move into a tie with Johnny Carson, who hosted five times in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
APRIL 2002
APRIL 23: Nominations for the 11th Annual MTV Movie Awards announced. (Awards shows on June 1st).
BLOCKBUSTER AWARDS
What would have been the 8th Annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, which for 7 years took place every April in Los Angeles, will not be held in 2002. Blockbuster made the announcement November 23, citing "uncertainty of the times." Blockbuster may be having financial difficulties as well, as consumers shift from renting videos to buying DVDs and watching more pay-per-view movies on cable and satellite. The Blockbuster Awards were possibly the most ambitious of all kudocasts as they featured a grand total of 65 award categories: 35 in movies, 24 in music and 6 in games, thereby covering just about every genre: Favorite Action Actor, Favorite Comedy Romance Actress, Favorite Family Film, Favorite PlayStation Game, Favorite Rap Artist, Favorite Villain, etc., etc., etc., as they used the show as a marketing tool. The 2001 annual ceremony featured appearances by movie stars (including Glenn Close, Drew Barrymore, Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty), television stars (Rob Lowe, Lara Flynn Boyle, Dylan McDermott) and pop stars ('N Sync, Ricky Martin, Creed), who came to hand out or collect trophies voted on by millions of rental customers, but Blockbuster officials, who had yet to book a date and a venue for 2002, worried that it could be too difficult and costly to pull off a similar production. The company hasn't ruled out staging the awards in 2003.
