Each year, Annie Award trophies are awarded in over 20 categories for the year's best feature film, video, television program, commercial projects and animated interactive production; as well as individual achievement by artists, writers and voice talent.
Annie trophies (in the form of replica zoetropes) were presented at a black-tie awards ceremony on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California. FEBRUARY 16: 17th ANNUAL AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS AWARDS
Hosted by the American Society of Cinematographers, the 17th Annual ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in film and television were held at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 16, 2003. Andy Garcia, Jill Hennessy, Greg Kinnear, Lucy Liu, Elizabeth Perkins and Robert Wagner headlined an all-star list of presenters at the gala.

At the event, Wilmer (Bill) Butler, ASC, was presented with the coveted ASC Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented annually to an individual who has created a distinguished and enduring body of work. Witold Sobocinski, PSC, received the ASC International Achievement Award, recognizing filmmakers who have created extraordinary bodies of work outside of the United States.
Norman Jewison was given the American Society of Cinematographers Board of Governors Award, which is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant and enduring impression on the art of filmmaking. The Board of Governors Award is the only recognition that ASC reserves exclusively for individuals who are not cinematographers. Film critic Roger Ebert was honored for "his integrity and passion for the art form (of movies)." Nominations for the ASC Television Awards were announced January 20th and the ASC Theatrical Awards nods were announced January 23rd. ~ Official website: American Society of Cinematographers

Yancey Arias (Kingpin), Catherine Dent (The Shield, Taken), Michael Dorn (Star Trek: Nemesis), Colin Farrell (The Recruit, Daredevil), Denise Faye (Chicago), Ed Harris (The Hours), Lorenzo Lamas, Amy Madigan (The Laramie Project), Gail O'Grady (American Dreams), Jeremy Renner (S.W.A.T.), Michelle Rodriguez (Blue Crush), Jeri Ryan (Boston Public), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and the cast of Alias (Merrin Dungey, Victor Garber and Michael Vartan) were among the presenters at The Fourth Annual Hollywood Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards® at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday, February 16, 2003. The Visual Effects Society (VES) hosted the Inaugrual VES Awards on February 19, 2003 to honor excellence for visual effects in feature films, television, commercials and music videos. FEBRUARY 20: 13th ANNUAL PIONEER AWARDS
The 13th Annual Pioneer Awards, presented by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation, were celebrated at the Manhattan Center in New York City on February 20th. The awards honor solo artists, vocal groups, songwriters and producers from the 1940's through the 70's, whose lifelong contributions have been instrumental in the development of R & B music. This year's honorees included Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Johnny Nash, and Koko Taylor; The Del Vikings, The Supremes, and The Dixie Cups; George Clinton and Maceo Parker. In addition, the Foundation’s Legacy Tribute went to Jackie Wilson, while Dionne Warwick, a true international superstar with more than sixty records that have made the charts since 1963’s “Don’t Make Me Over,” was presented with The Rhythm & Blues Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award.


FEBRUARY 22: 7th ANNUAL ART DIRECTORS GUILD AWARDS
David Hyde Pierce hosted the Seventh Annual Art Directors Guild (ADG) Excellence in Production Design Awards on Saturday, February 22, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Excellence in Production Design Awards are given to recognize the finest achievements from within their own ranks. The awards are given in the categories of Feature Film, Television Series, Television Movie or Mini-Series, and Variety or Awards Show, Music Special or Documentary to all professionals (production designers, art directors and assistant art directors) who worked on the given project.
Nominations were announced January 14th. Confirmed presenters included Doris Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond), Yancey Arias and Sheryl Lee (Kingpin), Brian Cranston (Malcolm In the Middle), Rachel Leigh Cook (She's All That), Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) and others. In addition, the ADG presented its coveted Lifetime Achievement Award to Production Designer Albert Brenner, who was "present" from his home in Italy. ~ Official website: Art Directors Guild Awards

HollywoodReporter.com: New Line's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers won the period/fantasy feature category and DreamWorks' Catch Me If You Can took contemporary feature honors during the seventh annual Art Directors Guild Awards. Towers production designer Grant Major accepted his award from the film's Sean Astin. When Grant thanked, among others, his enormous 430-person art department, audible gasps could be heard as guests leaned over to one another to ask, "Did he just say 430?" Catch Me's Jeannine Oppewall said her team took daily drubbings while preparing 186 sets in 60 days in two nations and four metropolitan areas. "We tucked our tails and paws underneath our hard carapaces" to make it through each day, she said.


FEBRUARY 22: 10th ANNUAL ROCK THE VOTE AWARDS
British superstar Robbie Williams, revolutionary rap group Public Enemy and 2003 Grammy nominees Vanessa Carlton and The Flaming Lips were the performers when Rock the Vote and MTV presented the 10th Annual Rock the Vote Awards in memory of Patrick Lippert at New York's Roseland Ballroom. Recording artists Peter Gabriel and Alanis Morissette were honored with Rock the Vote Patrick Lippert Awards and Chuck D, founding member of Public Enemy, received the 2003 Rock the Vote Founders Award.

The Rock the Vote Awards in memory of Patrick Lippert commemorate Rock the Vote's first Executive Director, who died of complications from AIDS in July of 1993. His legacy lives on, inspiring both those who knew him and those who will never have the opportunity. The awards ceremony recognizes in its honorees the activist in the artist, and the spirit that was Patrick's greatest gift -- the belief that each of us can use our talents to reach out to others and take part in creating a better future for our country and world. FEBRUARY 23: 53rd ANNUAL AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS (ACE) EDDIE AWARDS
The ACE Eddie Awards, presented for excellence in motion pictures and television, are presented by the American Cinema Editors to honor the best achievements in Film Editing.
Nominations were announced January 24th and this year's awards will be given at a black tie dinner on February 23rd at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Producer Kathleen Kennedy (The Sixth Sense) was honored as this year's recipient of the ACE Golden Eddie Award, making her the first female to receive the honor. FEBRUARY 23: 56th ANNUAL ORANGE BRITISH ACADEMY FILM (BAFTA) AWARDS ~ on BBC1 and BBC America
Sponsored by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the BAFTA / BAFA Awards, hosted by actor/writer Stephen Fry, were held at Odeon, Leicester Square, in the heart of London's cinema district.
Nominations for the BAFTA's were announced January 27 at the org's London headquarters. Chicago and Gangs of New York lead the field with 12 nominations each, followed by The Hours with 11, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers with nine and The Pianist with seven. ~ Official website: BAFTA Awards ~ also see nominated films detailed on IMDb's Road to the Oscars

Cable network BBC America broadcast the the Orange British Academy Film Awards, aka the BAFTAs (or BAFAs), live and commercial free in the U.S. at 1:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. ET on February 23rd. BAFTA awards were presented by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Connelly, Mena Suvari, Tim Robbins, Angelina Jolie, Gael Garcia Bernal, Miranda Richardson, Paul Bettany, Natascha McElhone, Thandie Newton, Kristen Scott Thomas, Sir Ian McKellen, Jim Broadbent, Martin Scorsese, Renee Zellweger, Sir Michael Caine, Michael Douglas, and current BAFTA president Lord Richard Attenborough.

Roman Polanski's The Pianist was named Best Film at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) film awards ceremony Sunday night. Polanski also received the Directors Award. Nicole Kidman's portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours won her the BAFTA Best Actress award, while Daniel Day-Lewis won the Best Actor award for Gangs of New York. The Supporting Actress award went to Catherine Zeta-Jones for Chicago; Christopher Walken's role in Catch Me If You Can earned him the Supporting Actor award. Pedro Almodóvar received the BAFTA award for Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film for Talk to Her (Hable con Ella), while Charlie Kaufman and "Donald Kaufman" received the Adapted Screenplay Award for Adaptation.

NNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS ~ on CBS
In a nod to the return of the Grammy
® Awards to New York City after a five-year absence, the Recording Academy® announced that in lieu of one host, performances and special segments on this year's show would be introduced by personalities associated with the city of New York itself. The show was supported on radio via Westwood One worldwide, and covered online at GRAMMY.com and AOL Keyword: GRAMMY. E! Entertainment Television also provides extensive coverage of the awards. Joan Rivers was unleashed on the Red Carpet for the traditional fashion parade. Nominees were announced on January 7th by Ashanti, Avril Lavigne, Cyndi Lauper, John Mayer, Justin Timberlake, Kenny Chesney, Nelly, Jimmy Jam (at the event, the gathered artists ultimately became Grammy nominees themselves). Get the complete list of nominees on Grammy.com.

Recording artists Etta James, Johnny Mathis, Glenn Miller, Tito Puente, and Simon & Garfunkel were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Engineer/producer and folk music archivist Alan Lomax and the New York Philharmonic were honored with Trustees Awards.
The Grammy Legend Award was given to the Bee Gees during a special segment featuring *N Sync, who performed a three-and-a-half-minute medley of Bee Gees hits, including ''Lonely Days,'' ''How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,'' and ''Stayin' Alive.'' The Grammy Legend Award is presented by the Recording Academy to individuals or groups for contributions and influence in the recording field, an honor this editor feels the Bee Gees should have been awarded years ago.

Eleven of the 104 Grammy Awards were presented during the 3 1/2 broadcast. The remaining 93 categories will relegated to "pre-show" announcements. Grammy presenters included

King, Patrick Monahan (Train) & Erykah Badu, Kevin James & Ja Rule, Ed Bradley, Willem Dafoe, Aretha Franklin & Bonnie Raitt, Vince Vaughn, Alicia Keyes & Cindy Lauper, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel and Michelle Branch.

The 18 diverse performances included Ashanti, Coldplay with members of the New York Philharmonic, Vanessa Carlton, Dixie Chicks, Eminem(!) with The Roots, Faith Hill, No Doubt, Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, John Mayer, Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Sheryl Crow with Kid Rock (replacing Lenny Kravitz) and James Taylor with Yo-Yo Ma. In addition,
Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl, No Doubt's Tony Kanal, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Van Zandt will perform "London Calling" in a special tribute to the Clash. The legendary punk band's former lead singer, Joe Strummer, passed away on December 22, 2002 at the age of 50. The Clash are currently nominated for Best Long Form Music Video for "Westway To The World." Lifetime Achievement honorees Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel made a surprise appearance, opening the show with Sounds of Silence. FEBRUARY 24: 15th ANNUAL CHICAGO FILM CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS
The Chicago Film Critics Association announced the nominees for the 2002 Chicago Film Critics Awards on January 5th and unveiled the winners on January 8th. Awards were presented in a ceremony hosted by Martin Mull and Fred Willard at Northwestern University's Thorne Auditorium on February 24th. In past years, the winners had been kept secret until the kudos ceremony, but since no tickets were sold to the public for this year's awards show, the critics board decided to release the winners list earlier. ~ Official website: CFCA

FEBRUARY 26: 1st ANNUAL COMEDY FILM HONORS
The
U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and HBO have launched the Comedy Film Honors, the first awards dedicated to comedy film. The event will highlight the ninth annual comedy festival, to be held in Aspen, Colorado, February 26 through March 2. With an executive committee that includes Steve Martin, Billy Crystal, Barry Levinson, Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly and Jay Roach, and voting body of the creators of comedy film -- writers, directors, actors and producers who want to acknowledge their peers – the inaugural Comedy Film Honors will recognize outstanding Studio Comedy Film, Independent Comedy Film and First-Time Director. Emmy® Award winner Mike Myers will receive the 2003 AFI Star Award, which recognizes individuals whose work represents excellence in film and television. As a follow up to the Festival’s Celebration of Free Speech in 2002, this year's festival will pay tribute to filmmaker Kevin Smith, whose films are independent in spirit and subject.
