The top celebrity contenders & entertainment professionals are going to be very, very busy these next two weeks - with events taking them from Los Angeles to New York to Park City, Utah. JANUARY 12: 7th ANNUAL GOLDEN SATELLITE AWARDS BLACK TIE GALA
Founded by former HFPA President Mirjana Van Blaricom in 1996, the International Press Academy (IPA) awards the Golden Satellite to honor the best in artistic and technical excellence in motion picture, television and interactive media achievements.
Nominations for the 2003 awards were announced on December 17, 2002, and the awards were presented January 12, 2003 at the Beverly Hills Hotel (the fete was originally planned for 1/18, then moved to 1/11, and eventually confirmed for 1/12 - which might be one explanation for the poor celebrity turnout). Legendary producer Robert Evans was the designated recipient of IPA's Mary Pickford Award for Outstanding Artistic Contributions to the entertainment industry; George Lucas was honored with the first Tesla Award (he was at the New York Film Critics Awards). Celebrities who did attend: Dakota Fanning, Doris Roberts, John C. McGinley, Julie Benz, Lolita Davidovich, Felicity Huffman & William H. Macy.~ Official website: International Press Academy ~ List of winners: Movies; Television ~ also see "Heaven" Spins Top Golden Satellite

JANUARY 12: 29th ANNUAL PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS ~ 9:00 p.m. on CBS
.....>> WE WERE THERE, WATCH FOR OUR REPORT! <<
Initiated in 1975, People's Choice Awards are given in the fields of music, TV and motion pictures. The 2003 gala, hosted by Tony Danza and Variety's Army Archerd, took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and aired on CBS. E! Entertainment Television was also on hand ~ they unleashed Joan and Melissa Rivers for the two hour red carpet pre-show. Our editor covered the Celebrity Talent Retreat, so be sure to come back here for the gift bag details and celeb pictures.

Nominations for the year 2002 (11/1/01 - 10/31/02) were announced on December 4th in a total of 16 categories. The television categories included nods for Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, and Debra Messing; CSI (the original and still the best), Everwood, and 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter. Among the nominees for favorite musical performers were Eminem, Nelly, and Creed. Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson squared off for the Favorite Motion Picture Actor award - again. The same three stars were nominated in this category last year. (For the record, Tom Hanks took the trophy in 2002 & 1999, Mel Gibson got it in 2001). Also nominated last year were Favorite Motion Picture Actress nominees Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock (Sandra won in 1999; Julia has three-peated, taking the title in 2000, 2001 & 2002.) Last year's third nominee in the category, Jennifer Lopez, has been replaced by beautiful Halle Berry. The separate categories of Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Comedy and Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Drama were dropped this year, but the favorite movie categories were retained: Favorite Motion Picture; Favorite Motion Picture - Drama and Favorite Motion Picture - Comedy. Go here for the complete list of winners.

According to the producers, The People's Choice Awards are chosen by a nationwide Gallup telephone poll, which uses a random sample to reflect the views of more than 200 million Americans. Fans are given no suggestions and can vote for any person or program they choose for each of the 16 categories covering TV, music and film. The top three vote-getters for each category become the nominees. ~ Official CBS website: People's Choice Awards

JANUARY 12: NEW YORK FILM CRITICS AWARDS
Founded in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle is comprised of Gotham-based newspaper and magazine film critics. The group assembled on December 16, 2002, at Manhattan's Muse Hotel to vote for
their selections for the 66th New York Film Critics Choice Awards. The awards ceremony was held at New York's Noche restaurant on January 12th and was attended by the industry's top names including Callie Khouri, Campbell Scott, Carey Lowell, Christine VachonDaniel Day-Lewis, Dennis Quaid, Diane Lane, Dylan Kidd, Ed Lachman, George Lucas, Harvey Weinstein, Hilary Swank, John Turturro, Josh Brolin, Julianne Moore, Julie Bowen, Martin Scorsese, Patricia Clarkson, Richard Gere, Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek, Todd Haynes, and Willem Dafoe. ~ Official website: NYFCC ~ Also see: Winners, runner ups, point totals and NYFCC member list

JANUARY 13: 30th ANNUAL AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS ~ 8:00 p.m. on ABC
According to Dick Clark Productions, the American Music Awards "are always in touch with the latest phenomena in American music." So it's no surprise that The Osbornes (definitely one of 2002's top phenomena), were chosen to host the event at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium.
Nominees were announced by Dick Clark, Toni Braxton and J.C Chasez on November 19th. < see Ashanti, Nelly & EMINEM Lead AMA's >. ~ Official website: American Music Awards on ABC ~ also see: Date with a prince … of sorts - ailing girl to get her wish. She'll meet Ozzy Osbourne.

Tim McGraw and Elton John opened the American Music Awards with a special duet of John's "Tiny Dancer." Also performing: Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Kenny Chesney, matchbox twenty, Missy Elliott, Toby Keith & Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, co-host and nominee Kelly Osbourne, B2K, Ja Rule with Bobby Brown, and Nickelback.

The show's presenters may have outnumbered the award receipients. Presenters, as announced prior to the show, included (take deep breath): 3 Doors Down, Paula Abdul, Erykah Badu, Pat Boone, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Vanessa Carlton, *NSYNC 's JC Chasez, Kellie Coffey, Common, Sheryl Crow, Jacob Dylan, Dru Hill, Carmen Electra, Jennie Garth, Kathy Griffin, Josh Groban, Darryl Hall & John Oates, Melissa Joan Hart, Steve Harvey, Patricia Heaton, Marques Houston, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Beyonce Knowles, Solange Knowles, Heidi Klum, Lonestar, George Lopez, Martina McBride, Jo Dee Messina, Frankie Muniz, Mya, Nelly, Nivea, Outkast, Mekhi Phifer, Trista Rehn, Lee Ann Rimes, Busta Rhymes, Goo Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik, Saliva, Ryan Seacrest, Shaggy, Britney Spears, Tyrese, and Lee Ann Womack. The oldest Osborne offspring, Aimee, absent from "The Osbournes" MTV reality series, was scheduled to present an award with Justin Timberlake. Creed were also scheduled presenters, but were replaced before the show, likely due to lead singer Scott Stapp's recovery issues.

Reba McEntire presented Alabama with the Award Of Merit, given in recognition of "outstanding contributions to the musical entertainment of the American public.'' The award was inscribed: "For over a quarter of a century, the energy and excitement of this band's music has brought them millions of fans, an amazing 42 No. 1 hits and the most awards in any category on the American Music Awards."

The AMAs attracted an overall average t.v. audience of 12.9 million -- a 19 percent slide from last year's show. Tickets to be in the audience were available through Ticketmaster. Tickets were also auctioned online to benefit the Neil Bogart Memorial Fund, through StubHub.com. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the tickets was to be donated to the Bogart Fund, which is heavily involved in research for the treatment and cure of pediatric cancer, leukemia, and AIDS.

We noticed that the show was carried out under extremely tight security, with the "red carpet arrivals" and after show departures taking place in a fenced-in parking lot behind the Shrine. We talked to several fans who had spent the afternoon and evening outside hoping to see their favorite stars, a futile effort with the new security measures and a disappointment to those who waited.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has honored the movie industry's best and brightest since their first awards luncheon ceremony in 1944. With the advent of popular television, the HFPA began honoring t.v. achievements in 1956. The Golden Globe Awards, regarded as "The Hollywood Party of the Year," was seen in more than 125 countries worldwide. Tickets to the Globes are scarce ~ the venue only accomodates 1200 people ~ and tix are available only to nominees, presenters, their studios, reps, immediate family, etc. Bleacher tickets were being distributed through AudiencesUnlimited.com for E!'s "Countdown to the Golden Globes Red Carpet" special, but "due to circumstances beyond AU's control, the event was cancelled." Fans were allowed to assemble on Wilshire Blvd., but not in or around the Robinson's-May parking lot (as in the past) for a glimpse of the stars, due to heavy security.

Golden Globe Awards nominations, in 11 television and 13 film categories, were announced at 5:00 a.m. PST on December 19th by actors Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under), Noah Wyle (ER) and Colin Farrell (Minority Report), HFPA president Dagmar Dunlevy, and producer Dick Clark. Dagmar Dunlevy had previously advised that 204 feature films (122 drama and 82 comedies or musicals), 123 television series (63 drama and 60 comedies), 64 mini-series or telefilms and 52 foreign language films qualified for consideration for the 2002 kudos. In addition, 84 songs were eligible for the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture.
